The Dept of Veterans Affairs Black History Committee is sponsoring an
Essay/Art Contest for students in grades 9—11. Winners will be invited to
read/show their winning submission at VA’s Black History Month Program.
Essay Topic: How African Americans Changed America
Art Subject: Portrayal of African American Life
Black History Month Essay/Art Contest
Prizes for Essay contest winner
and runner up in each grade!
Everyone who enters an essay will
receive extra English credit!

To enter, please complete the entry form below, attach it to your essay/art, and give it to
Essay Length: between 250-300 words, double spaced, 12pt font typed or printed if handwritten.
Art Type: any medium (watercolor, drawing, oils, etc)
Art size: size must be at least 11 x 13
⇒ All entries will be required to have a submission form completed and attached.
⇒ All student information should be included on the submission form, not on the submission.
⇒ All entries will be judged by members of the Dept of VA Black History Month Committee.
⇒ All entries should be solo efforts and original works.
Deadlines for all entries: 02/25/2010
